On March 21, 2008, Shanghai-based Spreadtrum Communications unveiled a new integrated A/V decoder chip targeting at high-end STBs (Set Top Boxes) at the 16th annual China Content Broadcasting Network Exhibition, Nikkei BP reported. Codenamed SV6100, Spreadtrum's new decoder chip supports both AVS (Audio Video Standard) and MPEG-2 SD (Standard Definition) standards.

AVS is China's homegrown digital A/V codec standard. Combining transport processor, A/V decoder, and a display controller with scaling, Spreadtrum's SV6100 can be applied to products based on a variety of standards: including IPTV (Internet Protocol TV), cable digital TV, digital satellite TV, and DMB-T (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting ?Terrestrial).

According to Nikkei BP, Spreadtrum has begun sample shipment of the SV6100 chips. Commercial SV6100-based products are expected to hit the market in the second half of 2008.
